Hong Kong protocol

A PPI infusion protocol developed in Hong Kong proven to reduce the risk of rebleeding in the upper GI tract post OGD. Constant infusion, following a loading bolus, is needed to stabilise clot by raising the pH of gastric juice.
Loading Bolus
- 80mg Omeprazole in 100ml normal saline STAT.
Continuous Infusion
- 8mg Omeprazole per hour written as 40mg Omeprazole in 100ml normal saline at 20ml/hour (five hourly).
It is usually given for 72 hours. Ensure each infusion bag is prescribed.
