Creatinine clearance
From WardWiki - Foundation Doctor Helper
The creatinine clearance compares the level of creatinine in urine with the creatinine level in the blood. The result aids in monitoring the kidney function.
How to calculate creatinine clearance
Cockcroft-Gault formula:
GFR = (140-age) * (Wt in kg) * (0.85 if female) / (72 * Cr)

Normal values
BNF renal impairment bandings:
| Creatinine Clearance | Level of renal impairment |
|---|---|
| 50-20ml/min | Mild |
| 20-10ml/min | Moderate |
| Less than 10ml/min | Severe |
Abnormal results
Lower-than-normal creatinine clearance may indicate:
- Acute tubular necrosis
- Bladder outlet obstruction
- Congestive heart failure
- Dehydration
- Glomerulonephritis
- Renal ischemia
- Renal outflow obstruction (usually must affect both kidneys to reduce the creatinine clearance)
- Shock
- Acute renal failure
- Chronic renal failure
- End-stage renal disease
